Express Entry Changes
Canada’s Express Entry immigration system has undergone a significant transformation with the release of new and expanded category-based selection criteria for 2026. These changes, announced by the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, signal a strategic shift in how economic immigration will be prioritized to meet critical labour market needs and support long-term economic growth.
What Is Category-Based Selection?
Category-based selection is an enhancement within the Express Entry framework that allows Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to hold invitation rounds focused on specific skills, occupations, or attributes, rather than ranking all candidates solely by Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. Under this approach, candidates who are eligible within a defined category are ranked against each other and then invited to apply for permanent residence if they meet the criteria for that category.
2026 Priority Categories
For 2026, IRCC has introduced several new categories while also continuing existing ones that address pressing labour shortages:
New Priority Streams
Physicians with Canadian work experience – Targeting foreign-trained medical doctors with recent work experience in Canada.
Researchers with Canadian experience – Supporting innovation and research-driven economic sectors.
Senior managers with Canadian experience – Aimed at attracting leadership talent.
Transport occupations – Opening opportunities for skilled professionals such as pilots, aircraft mechanics, and logistics specialists.
Skilled military recruits with job offers from the Canadian Armed Forces – A new path for qualified military professionals.
Continued and Renewed Categories
IRCC is also maintaining and renewing established category streams, including:
French-language proficiency
Healthcare and social services occupations
Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) occupations
Trade occupations
Education occupations
These categories are anchored to Canada’s labour market demands and contribute to targeted economic growth.
Why This Matters for Immigrants
The expansion of category-based selection means that qualified candidates who align with Canada’s specific economic goals now have additional opportunities to receive Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residence — even if their overall CRS score would not be competitive in general draws. Unlike traditional general draws, these tailored invitations focus first on matching specific skills and experience with Canada’s workforce needs.
Importantly, for categories tied to work experience, candidates must generally demonstrate a minimum of 12 months of full-time experience in a qualifying occupation, accrued within the past three years, whether that experience was gained inside or outside Canada.
Strategic Impacts of the Update
These updates reflect a broader strategy by IRCC to align immigration pathways with Canada’s economic priorities. As global competition for talent increases, category-based selection reinforces Canada’s commitment to welcoming highly skilled workers who can immediately contribute in areas of acute labour need.
For candidates considering immigration to Canada via Express Entry, this means staying informed about category eligibility requirements and ensuring that profiles are up-to-date with accurate language scores, education credentials, and detailed work experience. As categories evolve yearly, candidates with targeted skills and experience should be ready to take advantage of these specialized rounds.
