Express Entry Pool Shrinks Amid Rising High Scores
Canada’s Express Entry pool has decreased by more than 2,200 candidates, but the latest figures from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) show that competition remains strong among candidates with the highest Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores.
According to the latest Express Entry pool distribution, the number of candidates in the pool fell from 229,100 on August 3 to 226,859 on August 16, a decline of 2,241 profiles.
However, the number of candidates with scores between 601 and 1,200 increased from 19,096 to 20,205 during the same period, highlighting continued pressure at the top end of the pool.
Largest decline occurs among candidates scoring 351–400
The biggest change was recorded among candidates with CRS scores between 351 and 400.
The number of profiles in this range fell by 1,507, from 50,107 to 48,600. Candidates with scores between 501 and 600 also declined significantly, falling by 1,048 profiles from 19,705 to 18,657.
Several other score ranges also recorded modest declines, while some higher-scoring ranges increased.
The 471–480 range increased by 258 candidates, while the 481–490 range increased by 176 candidates. The 461–470 range also grew by 76 candidates.

Four Express Entry draws issued 8,807 invitations
The changes in the pool occurred following four Express Entry invitation rounds held between August 3 and August 16.
IRCC issued a combined 8,807 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) during this period:
- August 4: 507 Provincial Nominee Program candidates — CRS 768
- August 5: 3,000 Canadian Experience Class candidates — CRS 516
- August 6: 5,000 French-language proficiency candidates — CRS 391
- August 7: 300 Transport Occupations candidates — CRS 470
The August 7 draw marked IRCC’s first round of invitations under the revamped Transport category introduced earlier in 2026.
These targeted draws demonstrate the increasingly important role of category-based selection within Express Entry. Candidates who qualify for a specific category can potentially receive an invitation at a considerably lower CRS score than candidates competing in broader rounds.
For example, healthcare and social services draws in 2026 have had CRS cutoffs ranging from 467 to 475, while Canadian Experience Class draws have ranged from 507 to 518.
113,865 Express Entry invitations issued so far in 2026
The latest pool figures do not include the August 17 Provincial Nominee Program draw, in which IRCC invited 442 candidates with a minimum CRS score of 760.
Following that draw, IRCC had issued 113,865 ITAs through Express Entry in 2026, with Canadian Experience Class candidates accounting for 42.4% of invitations.
The August 16 pool distribution therefore provides a snapshot of the Express Entry system immediately before the latest PNP draw.
What the latest numbers mean for Express Entry candidates
The latest figures provide a mixed picture for prospective permanent residents.
On one hand, the overall Express Entry pool has contracted, with more than 2,200 fewer candidates than at the beginning of August. On the other hand, the continued presence of a large number of high-scoring candidates means that competition remains significant for candidates relying on higher CRS scores.
The data also reinforces the importance of category-based selection. Express Entry is no longer solely a competition based on achieving the highest possible CRS score. IRCC can select candidates based on factors such as French-language proficiency and targeted occupations, including healthcare and social services, trades, education and transport.
For candidates with CRS scores below the levels typically seen in Canadian Experience Class draws, qualifying for an applicable category or obtaining a provincial nomination may therefore provide an important alternative route to an invitation.
Express Entry candidates should continue monitoring both their CRS score and their eligibility for category-based selection as IRCC continues its invitation rounds throughout 2026.
