Updates to Canadian Study Permit Requirements and Temporary Policies for 2024
Navigating Changes in Financial Requirements and Work Opportunities for International Students in Canada
Effective January 1, 2024, a revision in the financial prerequisites for study permit applicants aims to better equip international students for their life experiences in Canada. This adjustment, subject to annual reviews mirroring other immigration initiatives, stipulates that, for the year 2024, a sole applicant must manifest financial capability amounting to $20,635. This sum is over and above their primary obligations of tuition and travel expenses, and the modification specifically applies to new study permit applications received on or after January 1, 2024.
Additionally, Minister Miller has issued an update on three temporary policies initially scheduled to conclude by the close of 2023:
- International students currently residing in Canada and those who submitted a study permit application by December 7, 2023, are granted the flexibility to engage in off-campus work for more than 20 hours per week until April 30, 2024.
- The policy permitting international students to count online study hours, comprising less than 50% of their program, towards a future post-graduation work permit will persist. This extension is applicable to students embarking on their programs prior to September 1, 2024.
- While the temporary policy offering an additional 18-month work permit to post-graduation work permit holders as their initial permit expires remains in effect for those whose permits expire by December 31, 2023, it is noteworthy that this temporary provision will not be subject to further extensions.
