IEC Renewal Update
Great news for International Experience Canada (IEC) participants currently in Canada!
IRCC extended its temporary public policy allowing eligible IEC participants to receive their subsequent work permits without leaving Canada.
This means qualifying applicants can now have their new IEC work permit issued and mailed to a Canadian address—eliminating the need to travel outside Canada to activate a new permit.
Who Qualifies?
To benefit from this policy, you must:
Be physically present in Canada without maintained status
Hold a valid IEC work permit
Have received your Letter of Introduction (LOI) for a subsequent IEC participation
Submit a request for examination and document issuance via the IRCC web form before your LOI expires
Include the mandatory IRCC wording required for processing
This policy is especially important because:
Flagpoling has been banned since December 23, 2024
IEC participants were previously required to leave Canada (often returning home) just to receive their new work permit
Without this policy, many applicants would face unnecessary travel costs and disruptions
The extension is now in effect until further notice.
A Reminder About IEC Participation
International Experience Canada allows youth (18–30 or 18–35 depending on country) from 36 partner countries to work in Canada under:
Working Holiday (open work permit)
Young Professionals (employer-specific)
International Co-op (Internship)
Some countries allow multiple participations (up to three), while others allow only one lifetime participation. IEC operates through a lottery system, and invitations are issued in rounds each year.
If you are considering a second or third IEC participation, timing and compliance are critical.
