The Federal Skilled Trades Program
he Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) is one of Canada’s immigration pathways designed for skilled tradespeople who wish to become permanent residents in Canada.
To be eligible for the FSTP, applicants must meet certain criteria, including having a valid job offer in a qualifying skilled trade in Canada or a certificate of qualification in that trade issued by a Canadian authority. They must also demonstrate their language proficiency in English or French and have a certain level of work experience in the skilled trade.
The FSTP is part of the Express Entry system, which manages immigration applications for several Canadian economic immigration programs. Candidates with the necessary qualifications create an Express Entry profile and are ranked based on factors like age, education, work experience, and language proficiency. Those with the highest scores are invited to apply for permanent residency through regular draws held by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
It’s essential to check the most recent eligibility criteria and requirements on the official IRCC website, as immigration policies can change over time.
What are the language proficiency requirements?
Language proficiency requirements for the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) in Canada typically involve demonstrating your ability in either English or French. The specific language requirements may change over time, so it’s crucial to refer to the latest information on the official website of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, here were the general language requirements for FSTP:
- English Language Proficiency: You can prove your English language skills through an approved language test, such as the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) for English. The minimum required score may vary, but it typically falls within the range of CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark) 4 to 5 for speaking and listening, and CLB 4 for reading and writing.
- French Language Proficiency: If you choose to demonstrate your proficiency in French, you can use tests like the Test d’évaluation de français (TEF) or the Test de connaissance du français (TCF). Again, the specific scores required may vary.
It’s important to note that language test results should be recent, typically within the past two years at the time of application. Additionally, meeting the minimum language requirements may not be sufficient to maximize your points under the Express Entry system. Higher language scores can lead to a better ranking within the Express Entry pool, increasing your chances of receiving an invitation to apply for permanent residency.
Please check the IRCC website or consult with a qualified immigration consultant or lawyer for the most up-to-date and accurate information on language proficiency requirements for the FSTP.

Age limit for UK citizens in IEC increased to 35
The governments of Canada and the United Kingdom are dedicated to providing young individuals from Canada and the United Kingdom with employment opportunities that empower them to reach their maximum potential.
Today, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, and the Right Honourable Robert Jenrick, UK Minister of State for Immigration, announced the signing of a new agreement between Canada and the United Kingdom for Youth Mobility. Minister Fraser and Her Excellency Susannah Goshko, British High Commissioner to Canada, have signed the agreement.
Under this arrangement, more young individuals from Canada and the United Kingdom will have the advantage of reciprocal employment opportunities in each other’s countries for an extended duration through the International Experience Canada (IEC) and the UK’s Youth Mobility Scheme.
The new agreement builds upon an existing partnership for youth mobility that was initiated in 2008 and introduces several enhancements:
- The age eligibility will be expanded from 18 to 30 to 18 to 35.
- Two new categories, namely International Co-op (Internship) and Young Professionals, will be introduced to complement the existing Working Holiday category for UK nationals visiting Canada.
- The maximum duration of stay will increase from 2 to 3 years.
International youth mobility allows young individuals to explore diverse cultures, languages, and societies, while also developing life skills and enhancing their future job prospects.
Implementation of the new agreement is expected in 2024.
Quotes
“The United Kingdom is a highly sought-after destination for Canadian youth seeking work and travel opportunities abroad. Similarly, Canada is a top choice for UK youth participating in IEC. This new agreement ensures greater accessibility for young individuals from Canada and the United Kingdom to work and travel in each other’s countries, benefiting from the advantages of international youth mobility. I encourage youth from both nations to embrace the opportunities presented by this program, explore new cultures, acquire new skills, and gain international experience and perspectives.”
- The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship
“As close Commonwealth partners, the historical and deep-rooted ties between the United Kingdom and Canada are of great pride to us. We warmly welcome numerous Canadians under the Youth Mobility scheme to the UK, while thousands of British individuals have similarly benefited from opportunities overseas. This expansion will create avenues for even more young individuals to establish enduring connections, develop their skills, and utilize their experiences to contribute to their host country and their home country upon return.”
- The Right Honourable Robert Jenrick, Minister of State for Immigration
Quick facts
International Experience Canada (IEC) is a reciprocal program that enables Canadian and international youth to work and travel in each other’s countries. The program comprises three categories:
- Working Holiday participants receive an open work permit, allowing them to work anywhere in the host country to support their travel.
- International Co-op (Internship) participants obtain an employer-specific work permit, enabling them to gain targeted experience in their field of study.
- Young Professional participants receive an employer-specific work permit to acquire focused professional work experience in their field of study or career path.
Canada has established youth mobility agreements or arrangements with 37 countries and foreign territories.
For the 2023 season, Canada is extending this opportunity to nearly 90,000 international youth from partner countries and territories. This expansion will assist Canadian employers in finding the workforce required to alleviate labor shortages across the country.
Since 2008, more than 240,000 Canadians have participated in IEC, and many have returned to Canada with life-changing experiences that have proven valuable in their personal and professional lives.
Youth who require assistance in planning their IEC experience may consider utilizing recognized organizations, which are typically youth service organizations providing work and travel support. These organizations can be non-profit, for-profit, or educational and may charge fees for their services.
As of 2021, Canada had 8.5 million individuals between the ages of 18 and 35, accounting for almost one-fourth of the Canadian population.
Essential Tips for a Successful Immigration to Canada
- Research Canadian Immigration Programs: Familiarize yourself with the various immigration programs available in Canada, such as Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), and Family Sponsorship. Understand the eligibility requirements, selection criteria, and processing times for each program to determine which one suits your situation best.
- Plan Ahead: Immigration processes can take time, so it’s important to plan well in advance. Gather all the required documents, including educational certificates, work experience letters, language test results, and other supporting documents. Ensure that your documents are authentic, translated if necessary, and meet the specific requirements outlined by the Canadian government.
- Improve Your Language Skills: Proficiency in English or French is essential for most immigration programs. Consider taking language proficiency tests like IELTS or CELPIP for English, or TEF for French, to demonstrate your language abilities. If your language skills are not strong enough, invest time in language training and practice to improve your chances of success.
- Enhance Your Education and Skills: Education and skills play a significant role in the Canadian immigration process. If possible, obtain additional education, certifications, or professional qualifications that align with the Canadian labor market needs. Upgrading your skills and obtaining relevant work experience can increase your chances of receiving an invitation to apply for permanent residence.
- Build Your Professional Network: Networking can be valuable in Canada’s job market. Use online platforms like LinkedIn and professional networking events to connect with professionals and employers in your field. Attend job fairs, career expos, and industry-specific events to learn about job opportunities and establish contacts that may assist you in your job search.
- Consider Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs): Explore the PNPs offered by different Canadian provinces and territories. Each PNP has its own specific criteria and targets occupations in demand within that province. If you meet the eligibility requirements for a particular PNP, it can significantly increase your chances of obtaining a provincial nomination and ultimately permanent residence.
- Seek Professional Advice: Immigration processes can be complex, and it’s advisable to seek guidance from a qualified immigration consultant or lawyer. They can provide personalized advice based on your circumstances, assist with the application process, and ensure that you meet all the requirements and deadlines.
- Be Prepared Financially: Immigration to Canada involves expenses such as application fees, language tests, document translation, medical examinations, and relocation costs. Ensure you have sufficient funds to cover these expenses as well as your living expenses in Canada until you secure employment.
Remember to stay updated with the latest immigration regulations and policies by regularly visiting the official website of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) or consulting with authorized immigration professionals.

Exciting news has emerged for individuals considering immigration to Canada through the Express Entry system!
Recently, new information has been released regarding targeted draws in various categories, providing increased opportunities for eligible candidates. Here’s a breakdown of the categories that will be given special consideration:
French-language Proficiency: If you possess strong proficiency in the French language, this could potentially enhance your chances of obtaining permanent residency in Canada. Fluency in French can be a valuable asset and may grant you additional points in the Express Entry system.
- Healthcare Occupations: Work experience in healthcare occupations is highly sought after in Canada. If you have relevant experience in this field, whether as a doctor, nurse, or any other healthcare professional, you may be eligible for targeted draws designed to fill the demand for skilled healthcare workers.
- Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Occupations: Canada places a high priority on individuals with expertise in STEM fields. If you have work experience in these areas, such as engineering, computer science, mathematics, or research, you could be a prime candidate for a targeted draw under the Express Entry system.
- Trade Occupations: Skilled trade occupations, including plumbers, carpenters, and contractors, are crucial for the country’s infrastructure and development. If you have experience in these trades, you may be selected in targeted draws aimed at filling the demand for skilled tradespeople.
- Transport Occupations: Work experience in transport occupations, such as truck driving or logistics, can be highly valuable in Canada’s expanding economy. Targeted draws in this category may provide opportunities for individuals with relevant experience to pursue permanent residency.
- Agriculture and Agri-food Occupations: Canada’s agricultural industry is a significant contributor to its economy. If you have work experience in agriculture or agri-food occupations, such as farming, crop production, or food processing, targeted draws in this category may be available for you.
If you believe you fall into any of the above categories, it is advisable to seek professional guidance from certified immigration consultants or lawyers. They can assess your eligibility, guide you through the application process, and provide personalized advice based on your circumstances.
Please note that while I can provide general information, it is essential to consult official sources, such as the website of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), for the most up-to-date and accurate information on Express Entry and Canadian immigration policies.

Canada Sees Significant Increase in Permanent Residents Through Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)
Canada has seen a significant increase of almost 60% in the number of permanent residents arriving through the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) in January 2023 compared to January 2022. Specifically, 2,065 new permanent residents were welcomed in January 2023, whereas only 1,300 were welcomed in January 2022. Canada aims to bring 28,500 permanent residents under the PGP in 2023, while in 2022, 27,255 permanent residents arrived in Canada through this program, marking a 132% increase from 2021.
Under the Immigration Level Plans 2023-2025, Canada plans to welcome 465,000 permanent residents in 2023, with 106,500 permanent residents coming through the family sponsorship category, which includes spouses, common-law partners, children, and parents and grandparents under the PGP. In January 2023, Canada welcomed 50,885 new permanent residents, which is a significant increase of almost 44% compared to the 35,450 newcomers in January of the previous year. So far, Canada has welcomed 13,000 new permanent residents through spousal/children sponsorship and the PGP.
To be eligible for the PGP, Canadian citizens and permanent residents must sponsor their parents and grandparents to immigrate to Canada. Applicants must meet several criteria, including completing an Interest to Sponsor form, being at least 18 years old, residing in Canada, exceeding the minimum income level, signing an undertaking to financially support the sponsored family member for 20 years, and repaying any social assistance benefits paid to the sponsored family members.
The Super Visa is an alternative to the PGP, allowing parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens to visit Canada for up to five years without having to renew their status. Those with a Super Visa can apply for an extension to remain in Canada as a visitor for up to seven years and enter Canada multiple times for up to ten years. The Super Visa is available all year round and is an option for parents and grandparents who require a Temporary Resident Visa for entry into Canada. Additional documentation, such as a letter of invitation and proof of medical insurance coverage, is required for Super Visa applicants.

Looking to immigrate to Canada but feeling overwhelmed by the process?
Extended Work Permit for Eligible International Graduates with PGWP
On April 14, 2021, the Canadian government announced a new policy that allows international graduates with a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) that expires between September 20, 2021 and December 31, 2023, to apply for an extended work permit. This policy allows eligible graduates to stay in Canada and continue working for up to 18 additional months, giving them more time to gain Canadian work experience, which can be valuable for those who are interested in obtaining permanent residency in Canada.
To be eligible for this extended work permit, international graduates must have a valid PGWP that expires on or after January 30, 2021, and they must have completed a program of study at a designated learning institution in Canada. Additionally, they must currently be in Canada and have a valid temporary resident status.
It’s important to note that this policy only applies to international graduates who meet the eligibility criteria. If you have questions about your eligibility or how to apply for an extended work permit, it’s best to consult with an immigration lawyer or a regulated immigration consultant.
