Canada Fast-Tracks TR to PR
Canada Fast-Tracks PR Applications for TR to PR Eligible Workers
Canada is speeding up permanent residence (PR) processing for certain workers under its newly introduced TR to PR pathway.
According to a May 4, 2026 announcement from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, this fast-tracking applies to individuals who have already applied for PR through regional immigration programs—such as the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)—and have been living and working in smaller Canadian communities for at least two years.
Who Is Included?
The initiative focuses on applicants who are already in Canada and have applied through programs such as:
- Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
- Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP)
- Community immigration pilots
- Caregiver pilots
- Agri-Food Pilot
These programs mainly support workers in high-demand sectors, especially in rural areas and communities facing labour shortages.
The plan was first introduced in last year’s federal budget.
Eligible applicants don’t need to take any extra steps. IRCC will automatically process applications that are already in the system.
Progress So Far
So far, the numbers are moving in the right direction. Between January and February 2026, around 3,600 workers were granted permanent residence through this initiative.
The government says it’s on track to approve at least 20,000 applicants by the end of 2026, with the remaining cases expected to be completed in 2027.
The Bigger Picture
The TR to PR pathway is part of Canada’s broader effort to reduce the temporary resident population to below 5% by 2027, while retaining workers who are already contributing to the economy and local communities.
