Candidates can be eligible for one or more of the following programs under Express Entry:

  1. Canadian Experience Class (CEC): This program is for individuals who have gained skilled work experience in Canada within the last three years. To be eligible, candidates must have at least one year of skilled work experience in Canada and meet other criteria, such as language proficiency and education requirements.                                                
  2. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP): This program is for skilled workers with foreign work experience who have the skills and experience needed to contribute to the Canadian economy. To be eligible, candidates must meet certain requirements related to language proficiency, education, work experience, age, and other factors.                                                                                                                          
  3. Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP): This program is for individuals with experience in skilled trades who want to immigrate to Canada. To be eligible, candidates must have at least two years of work experience in a skilled trade, meet language proficiency requirements, and meet other criteria related to education and job offer requirements.

In a sudden Express Entry draw, Canada has extended invitations to 7,000 additional candidates.

IRCC has recently issued invitations to apply (ITAs) to 7,000 candidates in the eighth Express Entry draw of 2023. This all-program draw includes candidates from the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class, and the Federal Skilled Trades Program, with a minimum CRS score of 484. This draw ties the largest-ever all-program draw in March 15, 2023. Moreover, it is surprising because it marks the second consecutive week of IRCC inviting Express Entry candidates, as usually, these draws happen bi-weekly.

The draws early in 2023 focused largely on candidates in the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), but now IRCC is back to considering all candidates in the Express Entry pool. Meanwhile, provincial immigration ministers have endorsed the first multi-year provincial immigration plan, which will work similarly to the federal Immigration Levels Plan. The provinces will now know their allocation of provincial nominations in advance, and IRCC offers another PGWP extension, which allows Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) holders to gain permanent residence.

Express Entry is an application management system for three economic immigration programs; the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class. It selects candidates for permanent residence based on the chosen cut-off score in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).

Express Entry Draws

The government of Canada held consecutive Express Entry draws on May 14 and May 15, inviting a total of 3900 candidates to apply for permanent residence. The invitation rounds took place only 24 hours apart from one another. 

 

Express Entry is a popular immigration method for skilled foreign workers. It manages the profiles of Economic Workers from three Canadian immigration programs. These programs are the Canadian Experience Class, the Federal Skilled Workers Class, and the Federal Skilled Trades Class.

The May 14 draw had 529 invitations sent exclusively to candidates who also participated in the Provincial Nomination Program. The minimum CRS score required for this draw was 718 points. Although this seems high, Provincial Nominations award recipients with an additional 600 points towards their initial scores.

 

Meanwhile, the Express Entry draw held May 15 invited 3,371 candidates, all exclusively from the Canadian Experience Class. The minimum CRS score required for the draw was the lowest it’s been since January 2019, with the cut-off being 447 points. 

Since the COVID-19 pandemic reached Canada, Express Entry has only extended permanent residence invitations to Canadian Experience Class and Provincial Nomination Program candidates. Supposedly this is due to the fact that candidates from these programs are more likely to currently reside in Canada.
