UK Travel Rules Tighten for Dual Citizens
New travel rules affecting dual Canadian-British citizens came into force on Feb. 25, 2026, leaving many travellers unexpectedly scrambling to secure the right documentation before their flights. Under updated United Kingdom entry requirements, dual citizens must present a valid British or Irish passport — or a certificate of entitlement to the right of abode — to board flights, ferries or trains bound for the UK.
Previously, some dual Canadian-British travelers could enter the UK using their Canadian passport without hassle. But with the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system now being strictly enforced, Canadians and other visa-exempt national travellers must hold an approved ETA to enter the UK. Dual citizens are not eligible to apply for an ETA and instead must travel with their British passport or equivalent documentation to avoid being denied boarding.
The requirement has blindsided many who held long-expired British passports or who never applied for a British travel document despite having British citizenship. While airlines may, at their discretion, accept some expired British passports (issued 1989 or later) alongside a valid Canadian passport, this is not guaranteed and varies by carrier.
For travelers without British or Irish passports, applying for a certificate of entitlement — which attaches to a Canadian passport to prove the right to enter the UK — can be an option, though it can be costly and slow compared with ETA processing for non-dual nationals.
