British Columbia has introduced important changes to its Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP), with 12 occupations now ineligible under the Skills Immigration stream. The update is part of the province’s efforts to better align immigration with labour market needs and focus nominations on occupations experiencing the greatest shortages.

Which Occupations Are No Longer Eligible?

The updated list primarily affects occupations in administrative, sales, service and religious sectors. Some of the occupations that are now ineligible include:

• Executive assistants
• Human resources and recruitment officers
• Accounting technicians and bookkeepers
• Administrative officers
• Administrative assistants
• Legal administrative assistants
• Medical administrative assistants
• Retail and wholesale trade managers
• Food service supervisors
• Real estate agents and salespersons
• Religious leaders and workers

Applicants whose primary occupation appears on the ineligible list can no longer apply through the BC PNP Skills Immigration stream under those occupations.

Why Has BC Made These Changes?

British Columbia receives a limited number of provincial nomination spaces each year. To make the best use of these allocations, the province has shifted its focus toward occupations that address critical labour shortages, including healthcare, education, childcare, veterinary care and other priority sectors.
